Why the name change?
With our move to our new home, a new name began to seem like a good idea. You see, we've moved off Atwood Avenue, we're expanding our service area, and we're offering many new programs. The Center has always been a resource for our whole community, but with these expanded opportunities, it became important to make our name more inclusive " less linked to one particular street or neighborhood.
Who are the Goodmans?
Our legal name is The Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Community Center, but you can simply call us The Goodman Community Center. Brothers Irwin and Robert Goodman owned Goodman Jewelers in downtown Madison. They earned a golden reputation for selling quality jewelry, and for being the most kind and honest guys you could ever hope to meet. Since retirement they have become beloved philanthropists, investing in our community deeply and thoughtfully. While we never imagined we would be the beneficiary of a $2 million gift from the Goodman brothers, we are honored by their gift, and are especially honored by their willingness to join us in our mission and have their good name affiliated with our organization. Their name so clearly reflects the quality, integrity, and community-building we hope to continue as we move into our next 50 years of service!
The Goodman Community Center is a private nonprofit. We carry the Goodman name with pride and happily share it with other Madison-area organizations, but we are not affiliated with them.
