Special events bring the community together to socialize, network, and celebrate in a variety of ways. Volunteers are needed to help at the event and in putting together plans. Call Goodman Atwood Community Center three months prior to the event date to join a team of volunteer event organizers.


ONE-FAMILY CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF:  PARADE & ICE-CREAM SOCIAL
Held on Saturday afternoon, May 19, 2007
Our “Hats Off to Our New Home” parade and ice cream social was a resounding success. More than 350 people came to decorate their hats, bikes, unicycles and scooters and be in our parade! It was quite a happy sight to behold – with Vogel Brothers’ bright-red construction vehicle leading the way and Mama Digdown’s Brass Band playing equally bright music to set the pace, we marched to Wirth Court park, tipping our hats as we passed the site of the Center’s future home.

PEAT-PIPER ANNUAL FUNDRAISER
A chili dinner and political forum for aldermanic districts 6 and 15 will be held on Sunday, February 11. The event is organized by the Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara (SASY) Neighborhood Association council. People can attend just the forum or just the chili dinner, which is a fundraiser for the Peat-Piper Scholarship Fund at East High School. The dinner costs $6, and the forum is free. Chili will be served starting at 4 p.m.

JIMMY BUFFETT NIGHT AT THE HARMONY BAR
One Saturday night in April, the Harmony Bar sponsors Jimmy Buffett Night. Popular vocalist "Jimmy" Chuck Bayuk and the Drunken Sailors play the sweet tunes of Jimmy Buffett as a fundraiser for the Goodman Atwood Community Center. Cost is a $8 minimum (more is always appreciated).

PANTRYTHON
Pantrython is an all-day phone-in pledge drive and auction generously hosted by 105.5 Triple M to raise funds and awareness for the Goodman Atwood Community Center food pantry. Pantrython begins at 6:00 am and bids close at 6 pm. The day’s events include pledges for songs to be played, appearances by local celebrities and musicians, call-in auction and pledges and other radio frolic. Supporting this event means supporting thousands of individuals in need of a nutritious meal.

HARMONY BAR / ATWOOD GOLF SCRAMBLE
Registration and putting contest begin at 11:30, with a 1-pm shotgun start. Each member of the four-person team hits a ball from the tee. Best shot is selcted and each in turn then hits from that spot, etc. until the ball is in the cup. Prizes will be awarded for team scores, long drives, long putts, closest to the pin and more!

ATWOOD SUMMERFEST
Atwood Summerfest, our annual festival, brings folks from all over the Madison area to celebrate. Musicians, bands, and performers pull out the stops to entertain people of all ages. Atwood Summerfest is child- and family-focused, offering games, rides, shows and foods for all members of the family.

COMMITTED CITIZENS DINNER
Goodman Atwood Community Center will be recognizing five Committed Citizens (individuals, youth or business) at our annual awards and recognition event on Tuesday, October 24, 2007. We are currently accepting nominations for this award.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS
The annual Thanksgiving Basket Program happens with the help of Community Action Coalition and United Way 211. The basket distribution will be held during Thanksgiving week on Monday, November 19, and Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at Saint Bernard’s Church gym, across the street from the center.
