Why a new home?

Our current facilities have served us well, but they are scattered and crowded and cannot support even our current level of programming much longer. Over the years we have grown dramatically, with seven times more programming added in the past 15 years alone. Our programming is strong, responsive and relevant, but we have become, by necessity, a center without a “center.” The challenge is clear: to keep growing, we must bring our staff, customers and volunteers back together, as one family, under a larger roof in a building better suited to our community’s needs. We must open a door to a building that will unite all of our programs and services in one place. This will allow us to meet the new and changing needs within the community as well as build opportunity for the future.

One of the most important influences on a child’s life is the continuity of caring, accepting adults who love them. With programs in multiple buildings, every time a child moves from one of our programs to another, she experiences a real loss — of a space she is safe in and a staff she trusts. We believe we have a responsibility to change this.

Meeting needs
One measure of our success is how much we are able to meet the growing demand for our programs and services. In the last 16 years, sheer numbers indicate our community values the programs we provide, endorsing them through participation and funding support.

Why give?

We’re strengthening lives of children and adults in our community
One of the best things about the Goodman Atwood Community Center is the proven impact we have on the people who use our center. Whether they are young or old, or somewhere in between, our programs open doors, create opportunities, and change peoples lives.

Our programs help youth navigate a complicated world
Center programs are structured to meet developmental needs unique to each age group. Our youth have better school attendance and their grades improve. The longer a child is in GACC programs, the better they do. We help them develop the skills they need to realize bigger dreams for things like college, technical or professional careers, and healthy, lasting relationships. They become good citizens with richer lives.

food

We boost the nutrition of children and families throughout Dane County
Food is big around the Center. Last year we provided the equivalent of 124,000 nutritious meals through pantry groceries and meals prepared for children and adults in our programs, and we also provided 1100 families with the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal.

seniors

Older adults are more connected
Several days a week our main room is filled with seniors who come for a nutritious meal with friends, and a game of nickel bingo. Some of them go to a gentle exercise class before lunch. And when a regular participant doesn’t show up, we check on them.
