Pantrython 2008 Was A Success

Pantrython 2008 was an all-day phone-in pledge drive and online auction, generously sponsored by 105.5 Triple M and broadcast live from the Triple M studio. June 5th, 2008 was Pantrython’s seven year anniversary.

Throughout the day, local musicians, community members, and pantry customers themselves talked about what we can do to help fight the hunger problem.

GACC hosted an online auction of cool stuff, including local restaurant gift certificates, artwork and pottery, play tickets, Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Fest tickets, and so much more! Triple M had on-air auctions throughout the day.

Pantrython 2008 raised over $14,000 for the new food pantry. The Center gives big thanks to Triple M, radio sponsors, musical guests, donors, pledgers, bidders, and volunteers who made Pantrython 2008 a success!

Triple M Radio Station Hosted Pantrython 2008

Last June 5th, Jonathan and Kitty of 105.5 Triple M hosted not only their usual morning show, a full hours of Pantrython 2008! It wasn't all just fun and radio frolic. Jonathan and Kitty, and the whole Triple M team, helped the Goodman Atwood Community Center raise awareness of the prevalence of hunger in our Dane County community and help the Center raise funds for meal programs and to stock the brand new food pantry in the new Goodman Community Center, currently under construction.

Pantrython is an annual, all-day phone-in pledge drive and online auction generously sponsored by 105.5 Triple M broadcast live from their studio.

Throughout the day local musicians, community members, and pantry customers themselves talked about what we can all do to help with the hunger problem.

Auction items included a variety of items for the home, for health and entertainment including massage certificates, restaurant certificates, artist-signed CDs and memorabilia, hotel certificate and more...

What is the History of Pantrython?

Pantrython started in 2000, when the Atwood Food Pantry was looking to raise funds for a pantry expansion project. Prior to the expansion, the Atwood Food Pantry was a small closet and a floorless shed attached to the back of the building at 2425 Atwood Avenue. As part of the Center’s expansion project in 2001, the food pantry increased to 400 square feet – still small, but twice the size it had been! Because of the added space, the food pantry was able to stock more nonperishable items and even some frozen goods. The pantry was then able to incorporate a “shopping list” system, so that pantry customers could choose items they needed, preferred or that were compatible with their individual health restrictions.

In subsequent years, Pantrython became an annual event geared toward calling attention to the battle to fight hunger in the greater Madison community – including helping to keep pantry shelves stocked.

This year, Pantrython continued with its origins, to help raise money to support the Center's meal programs and to stock the new Food Pantry, which will be located in the new Goodman Community Center scheduled to open this fall.

Plans for the New Food Pantry

GACC’s food pantry provided food to nearly 10,000 individuals in 2007. Of those, more than 3,000 were children. In partnership with CAC and the United Way’s First Call for Help, just over 1,000 Thanksgiving Baskets were given out. The Center also serves nutritional meals to more than 100 children each day in addition to older adults and community members who attend programs each week.

Front of Building as of Mar 21 The new food pantry at the Goodman Community Center, 149 Waubesa Street, is set to open late this summer. The new pantry will include a reception area for customer privacy, larger shopping area for customers to “shop” for their own food and refrigeration to be able to offer fresh produce, dairy and meat. Visit our One Family Campaign website to learn more about GACC’s building project.
