Part of Goodman Atwood Community Center's mission is to provide resources to neighborhood residents. These resources range from information about community and agency resources within Madison to food on an emergency basis for families and children in need.
FOOD AND MEAL RESOURCES Goodman Atwood Community Center has an Emergency Food Pantry
that provides two to three days' worth of emergency food. The Center also offers free meals every Friday;
everyone is welcome although a large number of guests are older adults. In addition, every child registered in
a youth program at the Center receives a well-balanced and nutritious meal as part of
their program. The annual Thanksgiving program distributes
Thanksgiving baskets of food to families in need. Goodman Atwood Community Center's food programs are
supported by donations from neighbors through the Atwood Full-Pantry Block Captain Program. more
EASTSIDE NEWS--LOCAL NEWSPAPER The Eastside News (ESN) newspaper is published six times a year by the Goodman Atwood Community Center to inform neighborhood residents about events, issues, resources and programs both at the Center and on the east side. Over ten thousand copies are printed, of which most are mailed directly, with the remainder available through drop locations in area businesses. more
ATWOOD COMMUNITY GARDENS Goodman Atwood Community Center leases
city land along St. Paul Avenue between Jackson and Corry Street for community garden space. Gardeners
rent approximately 20-by-60-foot plots for a nominal fee with the option to renew each season. Fees
are based on square footage of plot size. Because the policy is never to exclude people because
of their income, fees can be exchanged for volunteer hours. To get on the waiting list for a plot,
contact Marlene Storms at the Goodman Atwood Community Center, 241-1574 ext. 25. The waiting list for a plot
is at least two years long.
ATWOOD PRAIRIE A group of volunteers established and now maintains the native prairie plantings along the Isthmus Bike Path between Corry Street and Ohio Avenue (across the bike path from the
Community Gardens). Many members have their own plots to maintain, while others participate in group activities such as weeding parties and burning. New volunteers are welcome. It is a great way to learn more about prairie plants. Contact Rose Ann Scott at 241-0845 with questions.
JOBS BULLETIN BOARD Inside the Goodman Atwood Community Center entry-way is a bulletin
board for neighbors to stop by and read. City, county, and other jobs are posted. Photocopies can be made in the Goodman Atwood Community Center office for 5 cents a copy. We encourage local businesses to mail or fax (241-1518) job openings to the Center for posting.
FACILITY USE Goodman Atwood Community Center has meeting spaces available for neighborhood
groups to use. The main room (which is wheelchair-accessible) can be rented for larger gatherings of 20
or more people. One small meeting room, which can seat 4-6 people is also available. Banquet
tables, chairs, and kitchen space are also available. A sliding-fee rental cost and security deposit
for keys are required. Call Margo Tiedt at 241-1574 ext. 15 to make reservations or
e-mail her.
VAN RENTAL Goodman Atwood Community Center offers affordable community transportation for nonprofits. Vans are not available for private use.
The Center provides nonprofit groups with affordable transportation options, with 7-, 12-, and 15- passenger vans to area nonprofits for a modest fee.
Feedback has shown that by having these vans available for rent, groups have increased their ability to take advantage of local resources, cultural events, activities, and better meet the needs of their participants.
Because of the high demand for affordable transportation, the schedule fills quickly, so please plan ahead. Different rental options are available including: half-day, full-day, or
long-term rentals. Contact the Center for rates and availability 241-1574 ext 17.
