Goodman Community Center was a venue for the 12th annual Make Music Madison June 21. During MMM, musicians of all ages, skill levels and styles perform at various venues across Madison. The events are completely free, and the venues can range from someone’s driveway to a stage. Goodman’s site was in its outdoor classroom.
The band MT and The Don’t Bees kicked off the day performing music self-described as a folky-country-quirky-bluesy rock and roll. Fronted by Goodman staffer Margo Tiedt — who also organizes the center’s Make Music Madison lineup each year — the band is a staple of the event, and had multiple other performances scheduled across the city.
Troye Shanks was next up, weathering the windy first day of summer with acoustic classic rock. Shanks performed at six different venues across Madison during MMM. Shanks was followed by The Big Squeezy, an accordion band, which performs a wide variety of music from traditional polka to ’60s classic rock.
Señor Moment, a cover band inspired by the ’60s folk and psychedelic sounds, also performed. The afternoon rounded out with Chromatix, a Madison-based a cappella group, performing contemporary pop music and Bret Hagemeyer performing folk and blues covers as a solo act, such as Woody Guthrie’s “Hard Travelin’.”
Goodman’s Make Music Madison lineup wrapped up with Marigold Motel, a rock sextet inspired by surf rock and the British Invasion — and featuring GCC staff member Isabella Newman.
Every year, MMM celebrates the summer solstice by bringing the community together through music. At Goodman, the day was a joyful kickoff to summer.
