East Madison Little League has been offering baseball and softball programs to youth on the north and east sides of Madison since 1958. This year, EMLL is working to grow the softball program for 7- to 14-year-olds. EMLL had a strong softball program, but participation dwindled after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organization is attempting to grow the program back and get new kids involved. The summer softball season, which is open to kids of all abilities, runs from mid-April through July. Previous experience is not necessary for any age level. For youth younger than 7, EMLL offers coed tee ball. Co-op style practices will begin around mid-April with opening day May 10. After that, most games will be on weekdays.

Softball through EMLL provides many benefits to players ranging from physical health to personal development. Throughout the season, the kids will be outside to learn and practice running, throwing, catching and batting. Players will participate in co-op practices in combined age groups, which gives them an opportunity to learn from multiple coaches and from each other.

The kids will learn to work as a team and to communicate with one another on and off the field. This is a wonderful chance for children to learn how to support one another. Learning new skills, overcoming challenges and contributing to the team’s success will boost the kids’ confidence and self-esteem.

Most importantly, this is an opportunity to have fun and make new friends. The kids will connect with kids from other schools, expanding their social networks and benefiting them as they move into middle and high school.

“Softball was fun!” said Silvia, 11, reminiscing about last season. “My teammates were supportive. I liked learning a new skill.”

Parents and caregivers will also have fun and make new friends. Time and time again, EMLL participants talk about the sense of connection and belonging they have when coming to the ballpark.

“It was really inspiring to see players who had not picked up a softball before learn the fundamentals of the game and have fun,” said Eric, one of the coaches from last season who will return again this summer. “There are an incredible number of great athletes on the north and east side of town who are great softball players but just haven’t found out yet.”

Registration for softball is currently open for all age levels. EMLL also seeks volunteer coaches for all age levels.
