Goodman Community Center’s mission is to strengthen lives and secure futures. We support our immigrant neighbors and believe that everyone should be welcome in our community. Immigrants are valued and essential community members.
Friday, May 1, is May Day, which for over a century has been a day that celebrates workers’ rights and civil liberties. In Wisconsin, Voces de la Frontera is organizing a day of activism with a march at the state Capitol to highlight the contributions immigrants make to Wisconsin’s workforce and communities.
The decision to close our center in solidarity or remain open to support our participants is not an easy one. While we support the day’s goals, we must also consider the harm closing would cause to those we serve. Because Goodman provides essential services to communities most affected by disruptions, Goodman's programs and buildings will remain open on May 1, with expanded hours for school-age children — pre-registration required. Though it was a difficult decision, we believe staying open best reflects our values.
While still maintaining staffing for critical programs, Goodman supports staff who wish to participate in the protests and events occurring May 1.
We encourage everyone to learn about the challenges facing our immigrant neighbors and consider how you can help. Ways to get involved include engaging legislators, donating to organizations supporting and standing with immigrants, and speaking up for all in the community — especially those who face greater risks in doing so. We also encourage everyone to educate themselves about their rights.
Together we will continue to strengthen lives and secure futures for everyone.
