A group of Goodman Community Center summer middle school students had the opportunity to visit the University of Wisconsin Biotech Center for an exciting, hands-on molecular biology experience.
Students were tasked with solving an “alien encounter” mystery by investigating a group of alien suspects to determine whose blood had been found at the crime scene.
Working in pairs, students learned about gel electrophoresis, an important technique used in molecular biology to separate DNA and other molecules. They discovered how this technology is also used in forensic science to help identify individuals and solve crimes. After analyzing the evidence, each team worked together to determine which alien was responsible for the crime.
This experience brought GCC’s core values of connection, curiosity and courage to life. Students strengthened their connection by collaborating with partners, sharing ideas and working together to solve a challenging problem. Their curiosity was sparked as they explored real scientific techniques and asked thoughtful questions about DNA, forensic science and careers in biotechnology.
They also demonstrated courage by stepping outside of their comfort zones, tackling unfamiliar scientific concepts and confidently making evidence-based conclusions.
UW Biotech Center created such an engaging and thoughtfully designed experience. The staff’s enthusiasm and expertise made complex scientific concepts accessible, interactive and fun, leaving our students excited about science and inspired to continue exploring STEM opportunities.
