Successful aging may not be on forefront of everyone’s mind, but at the Goodman Community Center Older Adults Program, it is the heart of what we do. Research shows that there are three key characteristics for successful aging: active engagement in life, high mental and physical function, and low level of disease.

In December, we surveyed 100 Older Adults participants about how their experiences at Goodman are shaping their own success in aging. The results demonstrate the positive impact the program has had upon those who attend.

  • Older Adults at Goodman report a strong sense of community and belonging. 87% feel that Goodman has helped them feel more connected to other older adults in the community.
  • 84% of participants agreed or strongly agreed that coming to Goodman helps them to reduce their stress.
  • Most respondents also agreed that Goodman has enhanced their curiosity or interest in subjects such as line dancing, yoga, and arts and crafts.

When asked how participating at Goodman affected the outlook on aging, participants shared:

  • “I have been encouraged to stay active and to work on my physical and emotional health”
  • “Very positive now. I now look forward to the next 20 years of my life”
  • “I try to accept aging. I've met some friendly older people. I don't feel so alone if I stayed in my home or in my neighborhood.”

The survey results also highlighted areas where participants would like to see growth. In response, we will ensure that the schedule of activities is clearly posted outside of the meal site area for easier access. The Older Adults Program will also spend more time highlighting and celebrating diverse cultures and ethnicities within activities.

We are grateful to our Older Adults participants for sharing their voices and dedicated to continuing to provide a space where we can support successful aging in our community.
