By Gayle Laszewski, GCC assistant director of older adult programs
Every year, nearly 1 in 3 adults age 65 and older fall, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Wisconsin in particular has one of the highest rates of fall-related deaths among adults aged 65 and older in the nation.
As adults grow older, the risk for falls increases but there are many steps you can take to prevent falls. Steps include:
- Reviewing medications (and side effects) with a doctor
- Removing trip hazards at home (especially throw rugs)
- Making sure rooms are well lit
- Slowing your pace so you are more mindful of your surroundings and your footing
Strength training and exercises that improve balance are especially beneficial to preventing falls. When looking for a class or program that targets improving balance, look for BOSA — known as the Balance Stamp of Approval. This credential was created in 2019 by the Falls Free Dane coalition (led by Safe Communities) to help direct residents to fitness classes that incorporate evidence-informed criteria to improve balance and reduce fall risks.
