I hope that everyone is enjoying this winter season. Right off the bat, I’d like to congratulate the Eastside News on its 100th year anniversary in 2024! What an accomplishment. Here’s to 100 more!

I’m happy to report that Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara Neighborhood Association has reestablished its Environmental Committee after a long COVID-19-related hiatus. The purpose of the committee again will be to address the many environmental issues faced by our community. The committee will seek to improve the natural environment of our neighborhood, as well as the health and well-being of our neighbors.

Areas of interest and concern include the tree canopy, parks, air quality, noise pollution, water pollution and energy systems.

Committee members include Michael Vickerman, Doug Johnson, Joe Schubert, Betty Chewning and Lissa McGlaughlin. Others are welcome to join the committee. You do not need to reside in the SASY neighborhood nor do you have to be a member of the board or the neighborhood association.

The committee will be meeting on a monthly basis outside of the regular general SASYNA board meeting. If you are interested in joining, please text or call Chewning at 608-239-9426 for more information.

Neighborhood Grant Program

As mentioned in the last issue of the Eastside News, the SASY Neighborhood Grant Program is again up and running. In 2025, $30,000 will be available for neighborhood grants. Applicants may apply for up to $2,500 for their project idea.

Applications are due by Feb. 1 at 11:59 p.m. Applicants or their designee must attend the Feb. 13 SASYNA board meeting at the Goodman Community Center to discuss their proposals and answer questions about their applications.

The grant program awards money for projects and programs that enhance the experience of the SASY neighborhood for residents, visitors and businesses that operate within the neighborhood.

Past projects that have been awarded grant monies include public art, educational programs, public music events, place-making projects and public service programs. As a gentle reminder, grant funding can’t be used for general operating expenses, endowments or investment funds, religious or political programming, direct or indirect wages, consulting or contract fees or lobbying efforts.

Please visit the SASYNA website for more information and the application form.

SASY Social

Finally, we are pleased to announce a new endeavor for the neighborhood association that we think neighbors will enjoy — the SASY Social! This initiative aims to strengthen community ties and celebrate our local businesses, as well as providing valuable tools, discussions and resources for neighborhood residents.

By emphasizing opportunities for connection and collaboration, the SASY Social will highlight the unique character and vibrancy of our neighborhood. Each event will feature a local venue, creating space for neighbors to gather, learn and thrive. The SASY Social kick-off event will be hosted by the Harmony Bar & Grill, 2201 Atwood Ave., Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 4-7 p.m. Check the SASYNA website for more details.

See you there and until next time, be a good neighbor.
