Union Corners Tavern is bringing new life to Madison’s east side nightlife, pairing a warm neighborhood feel with the polish and know-how of one of the city’s well-established restaurateurs. The new tavern opened Nov. 4 at 2438 Winnebago St. in the Union Corners development.
The latest project is from Mike Kull of Rare Steakhouse — owner of the acclaimed downtown restaurant known for its refined dining, top tier steaks and commitment to service. With Union Corners Tavern, that same commitment to quality arrives in a more relaxed, come-as-you-are setting designed for neighbors, family and friends.
The menu at Union Corners Tavern focuses on familiar pub fare that is carefully updated rather than overcomplicated. Chef Jake Lawler, a recent finalist on Martha Stewart and José Andrés’ “Yes, Chef,” takes familiar favorites prepared thoughtfully with local ingredients as their focus. Diners will find some classic Wisconsin appetizers like fried cheese curds alongside flatbread pizzas and other bar favorites that are easy to pair with a beer or cocktail.

The sandwich selection is a highlight, featuring options like a signature double smash burger or grilled chicken shawarma wrap. Entrees lean into hearty tavern fare, with options such as a fried walleye or whitefish plate, BBQ ribs and other inspired dishes that reflect Kull’s elevated dining standards.
The tavern has quickly become an easy stop for people who live and work nearby, and a laid-back destination for classic Wisconsin comfort. Inside, the space feels playful yet relaxed, decorated with model airplanes, boats in the rafters and walls lined with rowing photos that connect to Madison’s lake and rowing culture.
The inclusion of Skee-Ball lends to this playful atmosphere by adding a nostalgic touch. Kull stresses the inclusivity of Skee-Ball being a game for any age or skill level, and plans to start a league in January.
Kull’s background with Rare Steakhouse still shines through in the little details — from the friendly and attentive staff to a bar thoughtfully stocked with local beers and classic cocktails made to pair perfectly with the hearty menu.
“We want to be a place where neighbors and families can come on a regular basis, where the menu is reasonably priced, but doesn’t have to be your typical out of the fryer pub food,” Kull wrote in an email.
Union Corners Tavern is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
