Position purpose

Goodman Community Center (GCC) strengthens lives and secures futures, envisioning a community where everyone has the resources they need to be successful. We are hiring for the position of Substitute Teacher - Elementary Afterschool to support our Early Childhood program. The Afterschool Program at Goodman Community Center is a place for children from all backgrounds to recreate, socialize, learn and grow. As a 21st Century Community Learning Center, we provide academic and enrichment opportunities intentionally designed to be hands-on and connected to school day goals while helping children develop social-emotional and problem-solving skills. This program serves Kindergarten – 5th grade students.

Job Description

Job Classification: Part-time
FLSA Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt
Program Hours: Monday 12:30pm – 6pm, Tuesday-Friday 2:15pm-6pm 

Program Duties:
• Actively participate in all aspects of the program day.
• Ensure all children in program are tracked according to GCC expectations.
• Role model respectful behavior and responsible choices.
• Help staff supervise children and make sure they are safe at all times.
• Support children in their academics and encourage literacy and math skills during the program day.
• Assist with clean up after projects or meals (wiping down tables, sweeping, mopping).
• Help with classroom organization and prepping activities for the following day.

Administrative Duties
• Follow policies and procedures of Goodman Community Center’s Childcare Program.
• Be knowledgeable of and adhere to state licensing regulations and city of Madison accreditation standards.
• Respect confidentiality of GCC families and staff.
• Keep accurate record of timesheet.
• Respond timely to requests from teachers needing substitute coverage. Communicate any changes to availability to manager.

• 18 years of age or older.
• Graduation from high school.
• Experience working in an after school setting.

Physical Requirements:
• Willingness to work during peak periods as required and available.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds daily.
• Ability to move, twist and bend regularly to perform with students or in moving classroom furniture.
• Ability to stand and work upright for entire scheduled shift.

• Completion of one non-credit approved course in early childhood education or completion of one course for credit in early childhood education or its equivalent at an institution of higher education.
• Familiarity with State of WI Child Care Licensing Rules and Regulations and City of Madison Accreditation Guidelines.
• Experience working with staff and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
