The Assistant Director of Fitness (AD Fitness) focuses on GCC’s building blocks for developing and implementing programs related to nutrition and healthy habits for children through adults. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Operations and Programs (SD), the AD Fitness establishes policies, procedures and measurement outcomes for GCC’s onsite fitness center participation and fitness programming.  This includes developing and maintaining membership enrollment, working with program leaders on health and fitness programming for their areas, and working with staff on their health and fitness needs.  The AD Fitness is responsible for maintaining a safe and appealing fitness center environment.  Through implementation of health and fitness programming, the AD Fitness helps GCC to deliver its mission to strengthen lives and secure futures.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Management:

  • Design and implement fitness and wellness programming ensuring compliance with budget and safety requirements.
  • Develop policies and procedures to support programming.
  • In consultation with the Strategic Initiatives and Program Impact Director, develop and implement a marketing strategy for fitness programming.
  • Design and implement personal, small group, and exercise classes for all ages and diverse types of instruction (yoga, Pilates, TRX, cardio and etc.)
  • Assess staffing needs and recruit Fitness staff/contractors to meet programming needs.
  • Develop programming schedules to meet customer demand.
  • Manage and provide direction to FYI, Older Adult and Fitness staff in order provide quality programming and meet program outcomes.
  • Supervise Fitness Center staff and oversee the Fitness Center.
  • Promote a customer service-oriented culture with Fitness staff.
  • Interface with the SD and the SIPI to ensure alignment with funding sources and GCC’s focus on enrichment.
  • In consultation with the Director of Business Services (DBS), develop, maintain, and be accountable for programming budgets and expenses.
  • With the DBS and SD, create and contracts with vendors as necessary to support programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Customer Service

  • Promote a customer service-oriented culture which includes providing high quality services and customer assistance as needed.
  • Attract and develop relationships with Fitness program customers and potential partners/vendors.
  • Design and implement an enrollment process taking into consideration budget requirements and customer experience.
  • Communicate with customers to enroll them in programs, answer questions, and resolve complaints as necessary.
  • Evaluate customers’ physical needs and assign appropriate exercise activities.
  • Train customers to use equipment through a variety of mediums (written instructions, videos, and etc.)
  • Assess customer experiences in order to determine whether program outcomes are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintenance

  • Set up and maintain fitness equipment to ensure safe use.
  • Ensure the fitness spaces and center are safe and clean.
  • Organize and stock supplies for programming and the fitness center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY

  • Under the direction of the SD and in consultation with the Director of HR, make hiring decisions and execute other personnel transactions including but not limited to merit increases, promotions/demotions, dismissals, and etc.
  • With the SD set performance goals and coach and mentor direct and indirect reports.
  • Evaluate the performance of direct and indirect reports through GCC’s performance evaluation process.
  • Encourage direct and indirect reports’ professional development.
  • Review and approve payroll related transactions for direct and indirect reports as necessary, including but not limited to timecard review and approval, time off request review and approval, and etc.
  • Perform to the standards of GCC’s leadership values and competencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in recreation and fitness management.
  • First-aid training and CPR/AED certification required.
  • Knowledge and interest in fitness industry.
  • Experience with developing and implementing fitness programs.
  • Experience with maintaining fitness equipment.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service driven focus.
  • Excellent communication and verbal skills.
  • Ability to build trusting relationship with customers.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to flexible hours as necessary including nights and weekends.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work with customers in-person to deliver programming and participate in in-person team and other meetings.
  • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time as necessary.
  • Ability to work in multiple environments (i.e. fitness center, work station at GCC, and remotely as needed).
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to train others on exercises and how to use exercise equipment.
  • Ability to kneel and twist frequently.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull up to 35 pounds frequently.

PREFERENCES

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Kinesiology or related field preferred.
  • Certified personal trainer certification such as ACE or NASM preferred.
