Thursday Oct. 3, 5-8pm, Ironworks
Movie night, discussion and resource share with pizza, ice cream and activities for kids 3+.

In 1997, Wisconsin ranked 3rd in the US for literacy, and only 13 years later, we dropped to 30th, with proficiency for our Black youth ranking last. Today, the gap between white and Black students in Wisconsin is four grades wide — larger than any other state. Our students across race, age and income-levels are struggling learning to read.
What can we do to change this story?
We start by coming together as a community.
On Thursday, Oct. 3, Goodman Community Center's *START Literacy Initiative is proud to host its first This LIT Just got Serious! community film screening and symposium. The evening features the literacy documentary Hopeville, and a group discussion led by *START Program Coordinator, Iris Patterson, featuring Lowell Elementary School Principal, Ellen Franzone, and other leaders in Madison literacy. Attendees will also be introduced to many of Madison's active literacy resources and get the opportunity to ask questions of program representatives (see accordion below for more info).
Dinner is included! FREE Ian's pizza and Chocolate Shoppe ice cream will be served for all attendees.
Childcare is provided in an adjacent room for toilet trained children ages 3+.

We're looking for Madison-area businesses to support this and future *START Literacy events.
We can't work towards a new literacy future for students without talking about how we got here in the first place. Help *START Literacy Initiative bring the literacy crisis conversation to the forefront of our community by sponsoring the upcoming screening and/or future program endeavors.
Please contact Goodman's Corporate Giving & Events Manager, Meghan, at mjohnson@goodmancenter.org to sponsor this event.
