SHAPING THE FUTURE OF MADISON ONE VOLUNTEER AT A TIME

The Goodman Community Center's success relies on the help of over a thousand volunteers each year. Whether you have a little or a lot of time, would like to work with people or not, we're likely to find you an opportunity you'll enjoy.

READ ABOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS

Program volunteers are an integral part of the GCC team and support the day to day operations of all of our programs and services. Volunteering in our programs is a great way to share your professional and personal skills to improve our community!

GCC offers a wide variety of programs and services to our community, and volunteers help in all areas. They include: full day preschool & 4k for youth ages 3-5, afterschool programming for elementary, middle, and high school students, meals and activities for older adults, a food pantry, gardening and building maintenance, and our eastside news a bi-monthly paper distributed to households in our community. Do you have other skills or interests to share with our community? Contact us to discuss the possibilities!

IS VOLUNTEERING IN A PROGRAM RIGHT FOR YOU?

  • Most GCC programming is held Monday-Friday during the day. We do have some opportunities that have evening or weekend openings, check the list of current openings below to see which roles are currently recruiting.
  • Program roles often require the ability to volunteer on a regular schedule: the same day and time each week.
  • We generally ask for a minimum of a 3 month commitment when volunteering in a program.

BENEFITS

Becoming a program volunteer at GCC has many benefits. You’ll be joining a team of hundreds of volunteers and staff working together to strengthen lives and secure futures. Here are some of the benefits volunteering can provide:

  • Personal and professional growth: strengthen your existing skills and learn new skills as you volunteer.
  • Work in a community center which embraces and reflects the diversity of our community. Meet new people and expand your world view.
  • Make a difference! Every volunteer role is designed to fill a need in our community – your work changes lives.
  • 10% off at the GCC coffee cart.
  • Free access to GCC’s fitness center. Earn a 10 use punch card for every 10 hours you volunteer.

CURRENT OPENINGS

We are currently recruiting volunteers for the following roles. Needs change frequently, so check back soon if you don’t see what you’re looking for.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ONGOING VOLUNTEER ROLE

The first step in volunteering at the GCC is to attend one of our volunteer orientations. Orientations include a behind the scenes tour, introduction to our mission and programs, and more information on our current volunteer opportunities. Once you have attended an orientation, our Volunteer Manager will work with you to find the right fit in one of our programs.

Orientations are held twice a month on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 11:00 am-12:30 pm and the 4th Monday of the month from 4:00-5:30 pm.  Click here to see upcoming dates and reserve your spot.

Here are some ways people have described GCC and our orientation after attending:

Want to help, but can’t commit to a regular weekly volunteer role? Special events and projects are held throughout the year and rely on volunteers like you! You don’t need to be a current GCC volunteer or attend an orientation to help out at special events – so you can jump in and get started right away!

BENEFITS

Volunteering at GCC has many benefits. You’ll be joining a team of hundreds of volunteers and staff working together to strengthen lives and secure futures. Here are some of the benefits volunteering for our special events can provide:

  • Flexible: whether you can volunteer once a year or once a month, special events provide the opportunity to give back on your schedule.
  • Great for groups! If you’re looking to set-up a volunteer opportunity for a group, events are a great place to start.
  • Kids welcome! Want to volunteer with youth? Many events are perfect for families to volunteer together. We ask that children be old enough to participate in activities, so please consider your child’s ability to contribute when selecting a volunteer opportunity.
  • Work in a community center which embraces and reflects the diversity of our community. Meet new people and expand your world view.
  • Make a difference! Every volunteer role is designed to fill a need in our community – your work changes lives.

Gardening

During the growing season, GCC welcomes volunteers to spend a few hours getting dirty in our community garden patch. Volunteers assist with prepping and maintaining garden beds and harvesting vegetables which are used by our TEENworks youth in their kitchen classes and distributed in our Fritz food pantry. Sign up to garden any Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon in July and August.

Thanksgiving Baskets

GCC’s Thanksgiving Basket program has been helping families enjoy a homemade Thanksgiving dinner for over 26 years. This past year, 3,600 families received a basket: filled to the brim with everything needed to share a bountiful feast with friends and family. Over 900 volunteers participate in the Thanksgiving Basket program! Past participants will be invited to volunteer this year in late August – keep an eye on your inbox. Remaining volunteer spots are open to the public in September.

Holiday Meal

GCC’s older adult program celebrates the winter holidays with an end of year lunch each December. Volunteers help decorate and serve a meal for over 80 attendees for an afternoon filled with music, food, and laughter.
