Know where your next meal is coming from?
Be a News 3 Hunger Hero and give to children and families who don't.
Summer can be a carefree time, but not for everyone. Many parents struggle to provide their children with three square meals when they are out of school. We think too many children — one in nine kids in Dane County – worry about having enough food. Just imagine. That means at least three children in every classroom don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
This summer, Goodman Community Center and News 3 want to change that, but we’ll need your help. Our goal is to send a bag of groceries home with 300 food-insecure children and families enrolled in Goodman Community Center’s summer programs every Friday this summer. Together, we’ll provide food for 12,000 simple, but nutritious meals. Let’s do this! Let’s reassure those children, and their families, that they won’t need to worry about going to bed hungry this summer.
How to be a Hunger Hero
1. Organize a food drive
Hold a food drive at your workplace, faith community, neighborhood or club. We'd love to know if you're hosting a food drive for us, so we can thank you properly. Please fill out the food drive form below. We have an 11x17 poster, grocery lists (double-sided) and an info sheet for you to print and distribute. If you'd rather we print the materials and you pick up at the Center, you can note that in the food drive form.
The non-perishable food items we need are:
- Mac & Cheese
- Pasta Sauce
- Peanut Butter
- Fruit Cups
- Healthy Snack (Fruit Snack, Granola Bar etc.)
We order eggs, milk, bread and fruit to be added to the groceries weekly. Financial gifts help us provide these fresh items.
2. Deliver the food
We can receive donations at any time, but if you are delivering a large quantity of food from a food drive, it helps if you can deliver it directly to our gym so we don’t have to move it again.
The gym will be open for donation drop-offs:
- Thursday, June 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Friday, June 29 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, June 30 from 8:30 a.m. to noon
Watch News 3 all day Thursday, June 28 to learn more about the summer food crisis and who it impacts. Tune in to the News 3 Hunger Heroes Phone Bank between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to call in and donate.
Want us to do the shopping? No problem — we are able to buy in bulk at reduced prices. Your financial support strengthens our efforts, and gives you an easy way to get involved! Donations (of food and money) that exceed the need for summer meals will support the Fritz Food Pantry and food programs at the Center.
